Can You Properly Store Food In Storage Units?

We all know that storage units offer plenty of options. You can get units of varying sizes to suit most needs. Plus, you can store almost anything in your storage unit – within reason, of course! Some people have wondered whether it’s possible to store food items in a storage unit. Well, the answer is: it depends.

Why would you want to store food in a storage unit?

Believe it or not, there are many legitimate reasons to store food in some locations. For example, a restaurant or convenience store may need extra space to store bulk-bought stock. Individuals may also wish to stock up on food that they have bought in bulk as well.

Some businesses import and export certain foods and may not have enough space. A storage unit can represent excellent value for money, and it’s cheaper than renting an industrial unit, for instance.

What kinds of food can you store in storage units?

When it comes to storing food, storage facilities almost always have set policies on its storage. Some may not allow any food to be stored at all while others may allow certain types, depending on the contents and packaging.

You wouldn’t be able to store things like raw meat or poultry. Storage units are not temperature-controlled. At least, not in the sense that you could turn a unit into a walk-in freezer!

Also, you cannot store livestock – again for obvious reasons! So, what is it that you’re likely able to store in a storage unit?

Tinned food items

The good news is that tinned items are, in general, acceptable for long-term storage. Because they are completely sealed, they won’t leak or emit any odours. Of course, you must ensure that the contents are still edible when you decide to retrieve them out of your storage unit. Otherwise, what you eat could potentially give you food poisoning.

Grains, pulses, and nuts

Things like wheat, beans, cereals, and peanuts are also generally acceptable in storage units. The only requirement is they get stored in sealed containers. Again, tins are okay, as are airtight containers.

It’s essential, though, that the grains, pulses, and nuts are not kept for longer than six months. For things like flour, you should only store them for three months.

Do not store any of those items in paper packaging. That’s because it could attract rats or other pests.

Spices

In an ideal world, you should store any spices in a temperature-controlled storage unit. Thankfully, most storage facilities have air conditioning that keeps temperatures regulated.

Again, spices, like any other food items, must be kept in airtight containers or sealed tins. Avoid using Mason or Kilner jars as they don’t provide airtight seals.

Which foods aren’t allowed in storage units?

Aside from meat and poultry, you are usually not allowed to store fruit and vegetables. Also, things like cured meat products aren’t allowed either.

If you are unsure whether storage units in Staples Corner or other areas allow food storage, it’s best to ask. That way, you’ll know for sure what you are allowed to store in your unit.
