Dead Car Battery: What to Do Next

You’ve just been going about your day in a normal way. You got up, ate breakfast, and got ready to go to work.

When it came time to go outside, you grabbed your keys to the car. You put them in the ignition and turned it. But nothing happened.

You have a dead car battery.

It feels like the end of the world, but it isn’t! If your car battery is dead, here are the steps you need to take.

Get Out the Jumper Cables

The first thing you want to do if your car battery is dead is try to use your jumper cables (this is why it is so important to keep them handy in your car!).

Try using these to jump your car to see if it starts. You will want to use either a device that can help you jump-start the car, like the noco boost plus gb40, or have someone else help you with their car. Both cars should be off.

Attach the red cable to the positive terminal and the other side of it to the other car or to your device. Then, attach the black clip on the negative side to your battery. Then attach the other end of that cable to an unpainted metal part of your car.

Then, try to start your car! If it starts, do not turn the car back off! Keep it on, disconnect the cables, and drive around for about 15 minutes to ensure the battery recharges.

Find a Specialist

If your car doesn’t start when you jump-start it with cables, then it is time to find a specialist in the area or a mechanic near you. If the car won’t turn on, you’ll have to call a company that can either come to you or tow you to the mechanic to diagnose what is wrong.

You may need a car battery replacement if the battery is fully dead. A mechanic will be able to help you decipher if this is the case.

What Can Cause a Dead Car Battery?

There are a few reasons why your car battery may die. The following are just a few of the many reasons this could occur:

  • Leaving your lights on or radio running while just having the ignition on and not the car
  • Not using your car for a long time
  • Frozen battery in super cold temperatures

If you suspect any of these reasons are the reason for your dead car battery, it may be able to be fixed!

What to Do With a Dead Car Battery

If you have a dead car battery, you should try to jump-start the car first with either a device or with the help of another person.

If that doesn’t work, it’s best to seek out a mechanic to fix your car for you!
