Honda CBR650R: A sporty offering from Honda

Honda’s CBR650R was first unveiled at the 2018 EICMA, and happens to be an evolution of the 650F. Production of the CBR600RR also has been discontinued in overseas markets, leaving a void in the middleweight, supersport bike segment. The CBR650R is out to fill this gap, and the ‘R’ suffix is to show that the prime focus is on sportiness. In India however, the bike replaces the CBR650F and brings with it a whole lot of promise.

Engine

Packed neatly within the frame is a 648.72cc, four-cylinder engine that produces 85.9bhp and 60.1Nm of torque. The motor is liquid-cooled and comes paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. The Honda CBR650R is BSVI-compliant.

Specifications

The CBR650R looks nothing like its replacement – the CBR650F. In fact, it boasts of an aggressive styling, typically that of a sports bike. At the front, the nose is very identical to the Fireblade, thanks to the LED headlamps that have been designed in a ‘V’. It gets a clear visor too. It gets a sculpted tank and a sporty fairing with some graphics on it along with the CBR650R stickering. The split seats have a nice shape to them, and the tail section is rather stubby and features a small tail light and a pair of clear lens indicators. We particularly like the short exhaust too. The transmission casing finished in gold looks pretty cool. The full LCD instrument cluster features a speedometer, clock, fuel gauge, tachometer, trip meter, distance covered and a gear position indicator. There are also tell-tale lights on the right side. In terms of dimensions, the CBR650R is 2135mm in length, 749mm in width and 1149mm in height. Throttle response is very linear within the rev range. The top-end is the most exciting place to be, and the engine doesn’t run out of breath with high gears and low RPMs in the city. The shifts are smooth, but the clutch is a little heavy. The engine loves to rev, and you’ll love the sound from the inline-four. After 6000RPM, the engine is sprightly and vocal. Some vibrations can be felt, but it disappears as you keep revving. At 210kgs, the bike’s weight is quite manageable. The ground clearance, on the other hand, is 132mm, while the bike has a wheelbase of 1449mm and a seat height of 810mm.

Mileage

The Honda CBR650R has a fuel tank capacity of 15.5 litres. In terms of mileage, the Honda CBR650R is capable of returning 25kmpl by ARAI, in BSVI guise.

Mechanical Parts

This middleweight motorcycle is rather comfortable to be seated on, despite the sporty seating position. The clip-ons have been moved forward and the foot pegs are now set towards the rear. The saddle is comfortable and offers good support for both, the rider and pillion. You tend to feel one with the motorcycle with a sporty seating setup. You still sit upright on the bike, however. The front of the bike feels very stable, and it loves being chucked into corners. Due to less suspension travel, the ride feels a bit firm. The bike is always within control during braking, and while the tyres offer decent grip, they’re not confidence-inspiring. As far as the chassis is concerned, it is built around a diamond-type frame. The CBR650R runs on 120/70 ZR-17 tyres at the front and 180/55 ZR-17 tyres at the rear. Retardation duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front and at the rear.

Features

The bike comes loaded with a slew of features like a fully digital LCD instrument cluster, digital trip meter, split seat setup, alloy wheels, LED headlamp and tail lamp, ABS and a pass light switch.

Colours

The Honda CBR650R is available in just two shades like Grand Prix Red and Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic. Grand Prix Red is certainly a colour that is bound to be a favourite among young riders.
