What is El Adoquin?
The old part of Puerto Escondido, the liveliest and most traditional part of town, is called El Adoquín or El Adoquinado and is located very close to the main bay. It was the first cobbled street in the city, being today its main artery of reference, where there are handicraft outlets, restaurants and places to eat a snack, live music, pharmacies and other services. Traffic is closed at night, which turns El Adoquín into a lively place where you can walk around in complete safety.
What Is The Interest Of The Manialtepec Lagoon?
This coastal lagoon is one of the few ecosystems in the world where three types of water meet: fresh water from the river, salt water from the sea and thermal water from a spring. It is 15 km long and its mangroves can reach a height of 15 meters. “Manialtepec” means “place where water gushes from the hill” in the Nahua language. The lagoon offers at night the beautiful spectacle of its bioluminescence generated by a species of algae that lives in its waters. Biodiversity enthusiasts take a boat tour of the lagoon to observe reptiles and birds, including herons, parrots and ducks.
What Can I Do In Lagunas De Chacahua National Park?
This magnificent protected area of 133 square kilometers, located 74 km west of Puerto Escondido, is formed by several contiguous bodies of water, with extensions of green lake vegetation, mainly mangroves. The main lagoons are Chacahua, La Pastoria and Las Salinas. You can tour the park by boat, which takes you through lagoons and canals between mangroves, stopping at a crocodile farm. Nearby are virgin beaches where it is pleasant to camp. The park is home to many birds, such as storks, wild ducks, herons, pelicans and spoonbills, as well as some species of turtles that come to lay their eggs.
How Is Carrizalillo Beach?
Towards the east of Puerto Escondido, a quarter of an hour’s walk from the town center is this spectacular little beach, beautiful and small. The beach is quite closed off by land reaching the ends, so the waves are relatively calm. Playa Carrizalillo can only be reached on foot, by a stone staircase leading down to the sea. It is therefore important that visitors throw away as little waste as possible and that they take away the garbage produced. Carrizalillo has a rocky area where you can practice scuba diving and snorkeling.
